Katherine of Aragon
Margaret often thinks of her sister-in-law as âKatherine of Arrogant,â a play on words that doesnât seem apt. As a narrator, Margaret isnât always capable of reading Katherineâs behavior correctly, particularly when they are children. For instance, Margaret describes acts of warmth and kindness, such as Katherineâs attempts to cheer five-year-old Mary, as inappropriate and intrusive.
She also sees Katherine as hypocritical and fickle when the opposite is true; Katherine is the most consistent member of her family. Sheâs singularly obsessed with her marriage to Henry VIII, the preservation of which drives all of her decisions. Ostensible displays of cruelty, such as when she orders the murder of Margaretâs husband and gloats over his death, can be traced to what Katherine feels to be her obligations as a wife, not a desire to bring her sister-in-law low. Sheâs not driven by spite.
Exactly why Katherine puts her marriage above all else isnât entirely clear, though itâs at least partly in service of her home country; in any case, itâs not for personal gain. Unlike Margaret, Katherine steadfastly sticks to her principles even if it results in personal discomfort.
